Certificate of competency Deck officer class 5 gives the right to serve on ships with a gross tonnage of less than 500 in North and Baltic shipping as Duty Officer in charge or/and Chief Mate.

The curriculum comprises the following subjects:
Navigation
Navigation aids
Ship stability
Rules of the road at sea
Navigational watch requirements
D5 requires ROC or GOC/GMDSS, Imo 60/80 as well as 40 hours medical treatment course.
In order to be issued a D5 certificate, you need the additional courses:
ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System)
BRM (Bridge Resource Management)
ARPA (Automatic Radar Plotting Aid)
Holder of a D5 certificate who has reached the age of 20 and has at least 12 months' seagoing service as an officer in charge, may serve as master on ships with a gross tonnage of less than 500 in sheltered waters and lakes in the North and Baltic Sea area.
